Nevada State Historic Preservation Office Offers Free Statewide Training Led by National Preservation Experts

Commission Assistance and Mentoring Program Workshop will be held September 25 in Carson City

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), in partnership with the City of Reno, is pleased to announce a free statewide training workshop for local historic preservation commissions on Friday, September 25, 2026, in Carson City. The daylong workshop is part of the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions’ (NAPC) Commission Assistance and Mentoring Program (CAMP), a nationally recognized training designed to strengthen local preservation programs through expert education, hands-on exercises, and peer engagement.

SHPO invites historic preservation commissioners, local government staff, elected officials, site stewards, and preservation partners from across Nevada to participate. The training will feature presenters from around the country who specialize in preservation law, design review, commission procedures, public engagement, and long-term preservation planning.

In addition to Friday’s workshop, SHPO will offer optional historic building tours and networking opportunities on Thursday, September 24 in Carson City, and Saturday, September 26 in Virginia City. This gives participants the added opportunities to connect with preservation peers and explore the area’s historic architecture.

“This workshop supports the foundation of local preservation in Nevada,” said State Historic Preservation Officer Arthur Krupicz. “NAPC CAMP provides high-quality training that empowers commissioners with tools, knowledge, and confidence to protect the historic places that matter most in their communities.”

To register for this free workshop, please visit the SHPO website and complete the electronic registration form. A virtual attendance option is available for participants who are unable to join in person.

Register for the in‑person or virtual workshop here: https://shpo.nv.gov/services/certified-local-governments/statewide-napc-camp

Registration closes Wednesday, September 16, and confirmed attendees will receive the agenda and location details via email.
