Nevada’s Newest State Park Gets an Official Name

October 31, 2026

The Nevada Division of State Parks has announced that the 1,627-acre property in Dayton, NV will be known as Crossroads Canyon State Park, following a public naming process that received thousands of suggestions and votes. The announcement comes as the agency begins planning for the park’s future and seeks public input on potential recreational opportunities, visitor amenities, and long-term stewardship.

The name was selected through a public process that began in July 2026, when Nevada State Parks received 2,400 name suggestions. Staff reviewed the submissions and selected five finalists for a public vote in August. Of the almost 3,000 votes cast, Crossroads Canyon State Park received a majority of the votes.

The name reflects the property’s history as a crossroads for people, cultures and travel routes for generations. The Carson River corridor has connections to Indigenous peoples, westward emigrants, ranchers, the Pony Express, and the Carson & Colorado Railroad. The name also offers a subtle nod to local lore that the property once operated as a "divorce ranch".

“The public played an important role in naming Nevada’s newest state park, and we’re grateful to everyone who took the time to share ideas and cast a vote,” said Nevada State Parks Administrator Jonathan Brunjes. “Now, we have another opportunity for the public to help shape what this park will become.”

Help Shape the Future of Crossroads Canyon State Park

With the park’s name established, Nevada State Parks is moving forward with planning efforts to determine how the property can best serve the public while protecting its natural and cultural resources.

The division is seeking input from residents, visitors, outdoor recreation enthusiasts and community stakeholders to help form the park’s future. Public feedback will be an important part of developing a master plan that guides future improvements, public access, recreational opportunities and long-term resource management.

The public is encouraged to explore the park’s history by visiting the interactive map and guide. Fill out the survey at the end of the guide to share your ideas and help shape the park’s future. The survey is available Saturday, October 31, 2026 through Tuesday, December 15,

Crossroads Canyon State Park is not yet open for public recreation. Fort Churchill Road remains open as a county road through the property, but areas beyond the road remain closed to public use during the planning and development phase.
